  4. *** Subject: I1. What can be done about older 030 NeXT cubes that have a fan that turns in the "wrong" direction?
  5.  
  6. The fan on older 030 NeXTs cubes sucks air out of the back of
  7. the cube  which means that it draws unfiltered air in
  8. through the optical disk on the front of the cube.  This
  9. causes optical disks to succumb to dust must sooner than
  10. cubes with the new-style fan which turns in the opposite
  11. direction.

  13. NeXT has apparently reversed their decision regarding
  14. fan reversal in the case of machines that have been
  15. upgraded to 040 processor boards.  It is now considered
  16. okay to reverse the direction of fans in these machines. 
  17. If you have many third-party cards installed in your cube
  18. or an older processor board, you may wish  to consider not
  19. reversing fan direction (overheating could become  a
  20. problem).  In any case, do not reverse the fan's polarity,
  21. only reverse the fan assembly itself.  Perhaps the best
  22. solution is  obtain the cleaning kit and OD filter from
  23. NeXT.

  26. *** Subject: I2. Can I connect SONY MPX-111N to my 030 cube?

  28. The SONY MPX-111N internal 2.88 MB floppy drive which is
  29. shipped with all the new 040 NeXT machines is *not* a SCSI
  30. device, therefor there is no way of connecting that
  31. particular drive internally on an 030 system.

  34. *** Subject: I3. Why does the OD continually spins up and spins down?
  35.  
  36. A big problem with the Canon optical drives is that air
  37. flows through the drive to cool it.  Dust accumulates
  38. inside the drive causing it to fail with the continuous
  39. spin-up spin-down syndrome.  NeXT as part of it's 040
  40. upgrades provides a dust filter to prevent this.  If your
  41. drive has this problem it usually can be fixed simply by
  42. cleaning out dust from the drive.  NeXT sells a cleaning
  43. kit for both the drives and the optical disks.

  46. *** Subject: I4. How many colors can NeXT machines display?
  47.  
  48. The monochrome machines can display 4 gray levels.  You
  49. can use color apps on a monochrome machine,  they will
  50. converted into monochrome images and dithered
  51. accordingly.

  53. Color NeXTstations can combine 4 bits of red, green and
  54. blue primaries for a total of 4096 "pure" colors.  The
  55. imaging functions dither the image to produce
  56. intermediate colors.

  58. NeXTdimension can combine 8 bits of red, green and blue
  59. for 16,777,216.  There are not 16 million points on the
  60. display so all can not be displayed at once.  Further
  61. display technology limits the usable color space.

  63. None of the NeXT products support color look up tables
  64. where the user can define their own color palette on a per
  65. window basis. This feature is useful for displaying
  66. images which have adaptive lookup tables, and display
  67. pure grayscale images on the color NeXTstation.  On the
  68. NeXTdimension images can be converted to full 24 bit
  69. representation.

  72. *** Subject: I5. Why is my machine so slow when I run the monochrome and NeXTdimension displays?

  74. There is a bug with the window system in which if you select
  75. the monochrome display as your primary display the
  76. server will be much much slower.  The solution for those
  77. wishing to use both displays is to select the color
  78. (NeXTdimension) display as the primary display.  The
  79. most optimal configuration at present with the
  80. NeXTdimension is to run only the color display.
